They plan to make it available for educational and development work, expanding their dataset so they can improve the model before attempting any more significant consumer applications. The translation occurs offline, and in near real time on any relatively recent phone or computer. Having proved the basic notion, Domènech was joined by co-founders Evgeny Fomin and William Vicars to start the company they then moved on to building a system that could recognize first 100, and now 200 individual ASL gestures and some simple sentences. SLAIT is a startup built out of research done at the Aachen University of Applied Sciences in Germany, where co-founder Antonio Domènech built a small ASL recognition engine using MediaPipe and custom neural networks. Turns out that’s more or less exactly what happened. In 2012 Microsoft awarded its Imagine Cup to a student team that tracked hand movements with gloves in 2018 I wrote about SignAll, which has been working on a sign language translation booth using multiple cameras to give 3D positioning and in 2019 I noted that a new hand-tracking algorithm called MediaPipe, from Google’s AI labs, could lead to advances in sign detection. We’ve seen attempts at automatic sign language (usually American/ASL) translation for years and years. But while emails and text chat are useful and of course very common now, they aren’t a replacement for face-to-face communication, and unfortunately there’s no easy way for signing to be turned into written or spoken words, so this remains a significant barrier. People with hearing impairments, or other conditions that make vocal speech difficult, number in the hundreds of millions, rely on the same common tech tools as the hearing population. SLAIT claims the first such tool available for general use, which can translate around 200 words and simple sentences to start - using nothing but an ordinary computer and webcam. "Plus we plan to get in touch with Indian government, in order to know if some of the government spending on deaf people can be used to provide them with digital interpreter service, which can lead to higher employment of the deaf, and social equality," he said.ĭon’t miss out on ET Prime stories! "We have partnered with them already in order to know better how we can help deaf people in India," Wyhowski said. Working in collaboration with India Accelerator, the start-up is in touch with NAD and is gathering sign language data for India, he said. The plan, Wyhowski noted, is to have a free app, which has limited amount of phrases per month/week you can use, just enough to satisfy the basic communication needs of deaf people with low income. ![]() The cost is USD 150 per month for small businesses, and USD 450 a month for medium and large-sized businesses. The service allows the user to pay for the day, for the week, or for the whole month costing one, four and 11 US dollars respectively, according to the company. ![]() "All the translation is done by algorithms so that means we can differentiate on price as well, offering an inexpensive translation service which is handy and gives a lot of benefits to both deaf people, and businesses and service providers," Wyhowski added. "Using only camera on your device, our system provides the same services only an experienced sign language interpreter could do," he said. It just requires a camera on the device facing the signing person, and a connection to the internet, said Bondar. All the translation happens in the cloud. The pocket interpreter for the deaf relies on superior new technology: AI and neural networks. It can translate as quick as the person speaks, translate any sign language and can be plugged into many products, such as video chat applications, AI assistants, etc. Showcased in the Netherlands recently, the app can be used on multiple devices such as smartphones, tablets, laptops, or PCs. ![]() "By comparison, we offer a compellingly fast, easy, comfortable and economical solution," Bondar said. He said the translation softwares in the market are either slow or expensive, or rely on old technology which does not allow scaling to another markets outside country of origin. ![]()
